Why historic slate and copper is different from a re-roof
A commodity re-roof is a material swap: tear off, underlayment, shingles, done in a week. A landmark slate restoration is a craft project. The slate itself is quarried stone that outlasts every other component on the roof — the failure modes are almost always the underlayment, the fasteners, or the flashings, not the slate. Restoration means diagnosing which of those has failed, matching original material precisely, and rebuilding the details a modern shingle crew never touches: hand-formed copper step, apron, chimney, and valley flashings; ridge and hip re-bedding; and profile-matched slate replacement drawn from the same quarry region as the original field.

Copper — patina, lifespan, and why we hand-form on-site
Hand-formed copper flashings last 75+ years in New England — usually outliving the slate above them. Copper transitions from bright to brown to green-gray over 5–25 years, and that patina is protective, not decorative — the oxidized surface seals the metal against further weathering. We hand-form step, apron, chimney, and valley flashings to each condition on-site rather than using pre-bent stock, because every historic roof has irregular geometry a brake and a story pole can address that stock flashings can't. On roofs where the homeowner wants slower patina progression or a lighter aesthetic, we install lead-coated copper.

Historic district commissions typically review exterior changes visible from the public way — including roof material, color, profile, and flashing detail. In practice, that means matching the original slate profile and copper detail closely enough that the change is invisible from the street.
